What are dermal fillers?

Collagen loss is the leading cause of visible aging. During youth, your skin has a thick layer of natural collagen padding. As the years pass, you lose much of that collagen, and your body won’t create new collagen on its own. Your skin begins to sag and pool, creating lines, wrinkles, and folds. Dermal fillers work to replace some of that lost volume or enhance areas of the face where you’d like more refined contouring.

Most fillers are made of a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid, a substance your body makes naturally. When injected into your skin, the gel-like filler material spreads slightly, creating an additional volume that smooths and tightens your skin. Research shows that dermal fillers also prompt your body to create new collagen and elastin, which creates additional volume that lasts even after your body eventually absorbs and processes the filler material.

What types of dermal fillers are available?

A great deal of research goes into selecting the dermal fillers to bring to Levit Dermatology. Some of the available options include:

  • Juvederm XC®
  • Restylane®
  • Belotero Balance®
  • Radiesse®
  • Revance RHA® 4, RHA® 3, and RHA® 2
  • Juvederm Voluma®
  • Sculptra®

Each filler is formulated for use in specific areas of the face. Thicker fillers help smooth deep lines and folds and add volume to the mid-face area. Thinner fillers are great for smoothing fine lines around your lips or eyes, and some fillers plump lips or smooth the backs of your hands.

Many patients combine neurotoxin injectables like Botox with dermal fillers for a liquid facelift. This approach can yield dramatic results without the risks and recovery times of cosmetic surgery.

What is Sculptra®?

Sculptra® is a poly-L-lactic acid injectable that works to stimulate natural collagen production. While Sculptra® injections enhance volume immediately after treatments, the true benefits take weeks to develop. A collagen stimulator, Sculptra®, was initially used to replace facial volume in patients who have HIV/AIDS. Now FDA-approved for medical aesthetics, Sculptra® is incredibly popular as an anti-aging treatment.
